PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) -- A dispute over feral cats has cost the Portsmouth Humane Society's executive director her job.

The Virginian-Pilot ( reports that Jenn Austin was removed Thursday over the no- kill shelter's practice of having staff members adopt feral cats, sterilizing them and then releasing the animals into the woods. That's a violation of state law and the Humane Society's rules.

Austin's removal comes after the shelter's board sent a letter to the state, telling officials it was not aware of the staff's actions.

The shelter has a five-year contract with Portsmouth to serve as the city's animal pound. It will no longer accept feral cats.

The city had been taking up to 20 cats a week to the shelter.
