Coast Guard pulls 6 from 2 boats taking on water

Thursday - 10/10/2013, 5:20pm  ET

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) -- The Coast Guard rescued six people from two sailboats taking on water off the Virginia coast.

The incidents occurred during foul weather Wednesday evening.

Crew members aboard a 34-foot sailboat near the mouth of the Wicomico River reported trouble at about 5 p.m. Two Coast Guard vessels were unable to get the sailboat in tow, and crewmembers could not be hoisted aboard a helicopter because of the rough weather. Eventually the helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer, who was able to connect a line and the sailboat was towed to shore. One of the two crew members was injured, but the Coast Guard did not provide details.

Later, four people were pulled from a 36-foot sailboat that had hit a submerged object in the Chesapeake Bay near Reedville. Nobody was injured.
