Man sought in Stafford Co. homicide

WASHINGTON – The Stafford County Sheriff’s office is looking for a man as they investigate a homicide in Falmouth.

On Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office, Roberta Dewes, 59, was found dead in her home at 21 Kellogg Mill Rd. by a relative hadn’t heard from her since Saturday, and who then called 911. Deputies determined that Dewes had been the victim of a homicide.

Dewes’ van was missing, deputies say. John Cornell, 45, who deputies say knew Dewes, has been charged with stealing it. He’s also wanted for questioning in Dewes’ death.

Authorities gave no other information about the circumstances of Dewes’ death.

Dewes’ van is described as a tan or gold 1999 Chevrolet Venture with Virginia license plate JAH-1325. The van also has a rear hitch that is rusty. The deputies ask anyone with information about how to find Cornell to call 540-658-4400 or 540-658-4450. Information may also be given anonymously by calling 540-659-2020 or texting “Stafford” and your tip to CRIMES (27463).
