TAZEWELL, Va. (AP) - A former Tazewell school employee faces charges of embezzling more than $300,000.
Media outlets report that a grand jury indicted 53-year-old Willie Kathy Hicks, also known as Kathy Keene, last week. The North Tazewell woman is charged with 15 counts of embezzlement by a public officer and one money laundering count.
Virginia State Police say Hicks took the money from Tazewell Middle School while working there as a secretary and bookkeeper. She has since retired from the school system.
Commonwealth's Attorney Dennis Lee says the money included taxpayer dollars and other school funds.
The case remains under investigation.
