RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Decker is joining the state Court of Appeals.
Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Decker's appointment Tuesday. She succeeds Judge Larry G. Elder, who is retiring.
Decker worked in the Virginia attorney general's office for 25 years before joining the governor's Cabinet in 2010. She begins her new duties in November. McDonnell said he will name a new public safety secretary in a few days.
The Virginia Constitution gives the governor authority to fill appeals court vacancies that occur when the General Assembly is not in session. Decker's appointment is good through the first month of the next legislative session, which begins in January. Continued service will require election by the General Assembly.
