Tuesday - 10/1/2013, 12:57pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. -- Spending by tourists from other countries in Virginia broke a record in 2012.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Tuesday that international tourist spending totaled $425 million last year. The previous record was $390 million set in 2011.

McDonnell says in a news release that tourists from Canada spent nearly $155 million in 2012, an increase of more than 4 percent.

The figures are based on economic data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Travel and Tourism Industries, the Survey of International Air Travelers and Statistics Canada.

Revenue from domestic visitors totaled a record $21.2 billion, a 4 percent increase from the previous year.
