RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia saw increased production of wheat and barley in 2013, but oat production was cut in half.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says wheat production totaled 17.1 million bushels. That's 9 percent above last year's crop. At 275,000 acres, the area harvested for grain was 35,000 more than last year.

Excessive rain brought down the average yield to 62 bushels per acre -- 3 bushels below last year.

Barley production was 3.36 million -- or 11 percent above last year's crop. The yield of 82 bushels per acre was unchanged from 2012.

Excessive rain pushed oat production down 53 percent -- to 140,000 bushels.
