Monday - 9/30/2013, 8:16am  ET

CHARLOTTESILLE, Va. (AP) - U.S. Magistrate Judge B. Waugh Crigler is retiring after serving on the bench for 32 years.

Crigler will step down on Monday. His judicial assistant, Judy Pace, also will retire Monday.

The 65-year-old Crigler tells The Daily Progress (http://bit.ly/1fCfKDG ) that a panel of judges will recommend his replacement after interviewing applicants. The district's chief judge will make the final selection.

Crigler has served as a federal magistrate judge for the Western District of Virginia since Oct. 1, 1981.

He says he will miss the job. But he wants to give someone else an opportunity to have a career as rewarding as he has had.

Crigler plans to pursue work in mediation and spend more time with his family.
