RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia school is one of 12 around the country being recognized for its contributions to science, technology, engineering or mathematics education.

The space agency says it has named Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School in Suffolk as a NASA Explorer School.

The school will receive a NASA certificate of recognition that includes an American flag that was flown in space.

A team of NASA education professionals selected the schools for their classroom practices and uses of NASA educational content to engage a broad school population in educational activities.
