FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Longwood University is being recognized for its cyber security and digital forensics programs.

The Farmville school says it has been designated a National Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence by the Defense Cyber Crime Center.

Longwood says it is the first institute of higher education in Virginia to receive the designation and only the third in the nation.

The designation was developed as a partnership between academia and the government to establish standards advance the discipline of digital forensics and support the growing need for cyber security.

The Longwood Center for Cyber Security offers students a concentration in information systems and security and a minor in cyber security, forensics and policy.

Longwood is a public university with nearly 5,000 students.
