RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Dry conditions for most of August have tamped down yield prospects for some Virginia field crops.

The crop prospects by the Virginia Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service are based on field conditions from Sept. 1.

Soybean producers expect to harvest an average of 40 bushels per acre from 600,000 acres, a decrease of 2 bushels per acre from the previous forecast on Aug. 1.

The cotton yield is forecast at 1,022 pounds per acre, down from 1,050 pounds per acre.

The peanut yield is forecast to be 4,100 pounds per acre. This is a 600-pound-per-acre increase from the August forecast.

Virginia corn yields are expected to average 145 bushels per acre. That's no change from the previous forecast on Aug. 1.
