Virginia Court of Appeals judge retiring

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Court of Appeals Judge Larry G. Elder is retiring effective Oct. 1.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Elder's departure from the bench Thursday.

The General Assembly elected Elder to the state's intermediate appeals court in 1991. He previously served as a juvenile and domestic relations court judge, commonwealth's attorney and county attorney in Dinwiddie.

McDonnell said in a statement that Elder "exemplifies the best that Virginia has to offer -- a heart for public service, a desire for justice, and a great love for the people and laws of the Commonwealth."

The governor says he will fill the vacancy promptly because the Court of Appeals has begun its fall term. He says his office will accept applications until Sept. 16 and make the appointment by Oct. 1.
