2 more former GOP lawmakers back McAuliffe

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Two more former Republican state lawmakers have endorsed Democrat Terry McAuliffe for Virginia governor.

McAuliffe's campaign announced the backing of former Sens. Marty Williams of Newport News and Brandon Bell of Roanoke on Wednesday. Williams is former chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. Bell served two terms as a Republican and lost an independent comeback bid in 2011.

Last week, veteran Republican political consultant Boyd Marcus endorsed McAuliffe and said he's advising the Democrat's campaign against Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

Three other former GOP lawmakers who clashed with the party's conservative wing backed McAuliffe in March.

Cuccinelli spokeswoman Anna Nix said it's important to note that Williams and Bell also endorsed Democrat Creigh Deeds for governor in 2009.

After initially backing Deeds, however, Bell switched sides and supported Republican Bob McDonnell.
