NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech are opening an education center in Newport News.

The University of Virginia Eastern Regional Center will be jointly operated by the universities.

The schools say in a news release that the new center will make it easier for students to enroll in U.Va.'s School of Continuing and Professional Studies' certificate programs, along with courses in finance, information technology and other subjects.

It also will complement programs at the new Virginia Tech Hampton Roads Center in Newport News.

Classes will begin in the fall.

U.Va. President Teresa Sullivan and Virginia Tech President Charles Steger will participate in grand opening events Monday.
