Martinsville keeps top jobless rate in June

RICHMOND, Va. -- The city of Martinsville's jobless rate remained the highest in Virginia in June.

The Virginia Employment Commission says the city's seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 14 percent. That's down from 14.6 percent in June and 14.8 percent a year ago.

The statewide rate for June was 6 percent.

Nationally, the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate for June was 7.8 percent. Rates dropped from last year in 272 metropolitan areas, increased in 73 and were flat in 27.

Arlington County had Virginia's lowest jobless rate with 4 percent in June, followed by 4.5 percent in Fairfax and Loudoun counties.

The Danville region had the highest unemployment rate among Virginia's metropolitan regions at 8.4 percent. The Washington metropolitan region that includes Arlington and Alexandria had the lowest rate of 4.8 percent.
