SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) -- A church in Suffolk and the former slave who founded it are being recognized by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

The department is dedicating a historical marker Sunday at Mount Sinai Baptist Church. It was founded in a log building in 1868 by the Rev. Israel Cross.

The marker will echo the words of Cross, who is said to have ended every sermon with the advice, "Buy some land, build a home and get some education."

The current Mount Sinai Church was constructed in 1921. The dedication will feature remarks by its pastor, the Rev. William L. Lang, and Delegate Algie T. Howell.
