NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Former newspaper columnist Guy Friddell of Norfolk has died at age 92.
The Virginian-Pilot, which published thousands of columns by Friddell during his 60-year newspaper career, reports that he died in his sleep Friday. Friddell's death was confirmed by the H.D. Oliver Funeral Home.
Friddell earned a wide and devoted following as he wrote about politics, the pleasures of family, the wonders of nature, the genius of the Founding Fathers and his own misadventures for Norfolk and Richmond newspapers. The Virginia Press Association's top writing award is named in Friddell's honor.
He also was a popular speaker, the author of eight books and a mentor to generations of journalists.
