Fairfax Co. officer accused of faking hit-and-run to hide crash

WASHINGTON — A Fairfax County police officer has been charged with hit-and-run and filing a false police report after he crashed his cruiser into a utility pole and said another driver hit him.

Carl Joseph Biggs initially told officers the May 12 crash on Gallows Road occurred when an unknown vehicle struck his police cruiser in the back, causing the cruiser to spin and hit the utility pole. Biggs said that car did not stop and drove away, according to a Fairfax County police news release.

Initially, police issued a press release asking the public to contact them with information about the accident.

However, further investigation by the department’s crash reconstruction unit determined no other vehicle was involved.

Biggs has been placed on administrative leave. He has been an officer with the department for two years.
