COVINGTON, Va. -- The state has begun another renovation project to restore a wooden bridge in Alleghany County that is the last of its kind still standing in the U.S.

The Virginia Department of Transportation unveiled plans Thursday to repair the county's Humpback Covered Bridge.

VDOT historian Ann Miller tells The Roanoke Times ( a June fire destroyed a similar structure in Ohio, leaving the Humpback Bridge as the last standing. She said that made preserving it more important.

The $125,000 project to provide a new roof and other structural improvements is expected to be finished by the end of July.

It last carried traffic over Dunlap Creek in 1929 and underwent a massive restoration in 1954.

It's been designated a Virginia Historic Landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
