RICHMOND, Va. -- Nearly three dozen people who work to help crime victims are undergoing rigorous state training this week.

The participants will wrap up the weeklong training Friday at the sixth annual Virginia Victim Assistance Academy at the University of Richmond.

The 40 hours of training are designed to enable the participants to more effectively help crime victims regain control of their lives, exercise their rights and get access to necessary services.

The academy is sponsored by the university, the state Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund.
