Navy installations get new leader

Friday - 7/12/2013, 11:59am  ET

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The Navy has a new leader for its installations from North Carolina to Maine.

Rear Adm. Dixon Smith relieved Rear Adm. Tim Alexander on Friday as commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic. The ceremony took place at Naval Station Norfolk, the world's largest naval base.

The region under Smith's command is home to the Navy's East Coast master jet base in Virginia Beach and a large submarine base in Connecticut, among others. Alexander has held the job since 2011.

During his tour, Alexander coordinated regional recovery efforts following the F/A-18D plane crash in Virginia Beach and oversaw crisis response efforts following Hurricanes Irene and Sandy throughout the region.

Following Friday's ceremony, Alexander retired from the Navy after serving for nearly 33 years.
