NORFOLK, Va. - The Port of Virginia is wrapping up its best fiscal year performance in its history.
The Virginia Port Authority says the number of units that came through the port increased 10 percent to more than 2.1 million compared with the previous fiscal year.
The Port of Virginia is the third-largest port on the East Coast.
VPA's Interim Executive Director Rodney Oliver says there are a number of factors that can be attributed to the port's success, including an improving economy.
Oliver says ocean carriers are taking advantage of its 50-foot deep channels and there's an increasing number vessels that make Virginia its first and last stops.
The port also has expanded its rail service and pushed into new markets.
