Man arrested after early morning machete attack in Arlington

WASHINGTON – A man has been arrested after attacking two men with a machete outside an Arlington library.

Arlington police say Derrick Sutherland, 28, approached two men outside the Central Library at 2:50 a.m. and began arguing with them.

The argument escalated and Sutherland took out a machete and attacked the two men.

Both men suffered significant non-life threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital.

Sutherland fled the area after the attack but was eventually tracked down in the area of Wilson Boulevard and N. Piedmont Street and arrested.

Sutherland has been charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding.

He is being held without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility.
