Police cleared in shooting of Christiansburg man

Saturday - 6/22/2013, 12:41pm  ET

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A prosecutor says police officers were justified in their fatal shooting of a Christiansburg man in April.

The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/14PPjmd ) that the ruling by Salem Commonwealth's Attorney Tom Bowers was made public Friday.

Bowers says 41-year-old Robert Kevin Hughes fired the first shot when officers tried to serve him with a felony drug arrest warrant at his home. Two Montgomery County deputy sheriffs and a Christiansburg police officer returned fire. According to Bowers' report, Hughes went to the ground but when officers approached he drew his weapon again. Police fired additional shots.

An autopsy revealed Hughes had been shot nine times.

None of the officers involved were hurt.
