Va. health board member: regs set precedent

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The first lawsuit challenging Virginia's new abortion clinic regulations has been filed.
Falls Church Medical Center filed the lawsuit against state health officials this week in Arlington County Circuit Court. The clinic says the regulations are the product of a flawed process. It also says that there's no medical justification for requiring abortion clinics to meet the same strict building standards as newly constructed hospitals.
Opponents of the regulations have argued that clinics would have to make expensive renovations to meet the building standards. They claim the regulations are intended to put clinics out of business, not protect women's health.
The state Board of Health gave final approval to the regulations in April, ending a two-year regulatory process.
