UVa offering new architecture doctoral degree

Tuesday - 6/4/2013, 6:01pm  ET

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- The University of Virginia is launching a new doctoral degree as part of its architecture program.

The Charlottesville school says the doctoral degree in constructed environment will welcome its first students in fall 2014.

The program is slated to cover the consequences of the man-made environment, from environmental sustainability and public health to affordable housing and urban sprawl.

Officials say the new degree will allow candidates to regularly interact with a variety of students studying problems of different scales and nature rather than studying narrow topics in a given field.

The Daily Progress reports (http://bit.ly/11iyCLT) that the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia gave its final approval in May after the school's board endorsed it June 2011.
