Richmond VA hospital joins DNA project

Sunday - 6/2/2013, 3:12pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A veterans hospital in Richmond has joined a national research initiative to develop a genetic database with DNA samples from 1 million veterans.

McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center has collected blood samples from 601 participants since it began enrolling veterans in the database in March.

Dr. Michael F. Godschalk is overseeing the McGuire project. He tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the hospital wants to add 10,000 to 20,000 veterans to the database over the next five years.

When completed, Godschalk says the database will allow researchers to study things such as how genes influence response to medication.
