Lynchburg Symphony loses director, general manager

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- The Lynchburg Symphony is losing both its longtime music director and its general manager.

Founder Bruce Habitzruther retired last week after serving as music director and conductor since the symphony began 30 years ago.

General manager Deirdre Serio has resigned, effective May 31 when the symphony's fiscal year ends.

Habitzruther tells The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/16DDWkr ) that the symphony's reduced schedule was a factor in his decision to leave.

A Halloween concert is the symphony's only full orchestra event during the 2013-2014 season. There also will be two smaller events and several fundraisers. There were two full orchestra concerts during the 2012-2013 season, along with three smaller events.

Serio plans to return to technical writing. She says it's a coincidence that she resigned at the same time Habitzuther retired.
