Richmond Tea Party says it was among IRS targets

Sunday - 5/12/2013, 11:40am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The leader of Richmond's Tea Party says his group was among those improperly targeted by the Internal Revenue Service.

Laurence Nordvig told the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/12r24AI) his organization grew suspicious during questioning over a two-year period in which the group was trying to qualify for nonprofit status. It ultimately was awarded.

Members of the Richmond Tea Party were asked about the identity of its members and with whom they associated. He also said requests were made for communication records.

Nordvig said the IRS had "dozens and dozens" of questions about the group.

The organization is calling for a full investigation into what Nordvig calls an "abuse of power."

The IRS apologized Friday for what it acknowledged was "inappropriate" targeting of conservative political groups during the 2012 election.
