VSU takes steps to combat hazing

Tuesday - 5/7/2013, 4:30pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State University says it's taking steps to combat hazing.

The Petersburg school on Tuesday announced an anti-hazing initiative that includes a task force and an online guide to help students make better decisions about which groups they join.

In a statement, VSU President Keith Miller said the efforts will work to change attitudes and actions toward hazing.

The announcement comes after two freshmen drowned last month trying to cross the Appomattox River as part of an initiation ritual by a non-campus group.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/11QCggL) that Miller said the task force will explore additional ways to counsel to students about the danger and illegality of hazing. The new online guide will let students know what groups are university-sanctioned.
