POWHATAN, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police say three people have been killed in a single-vehicle crash on Route 60 eastbound in Powhatan County.
Investigators say the three passengers in the vehicle were killed after it ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Jerry B. Middleton of Chesterfield, was flown by med-flight to VCU Medical Center in Richmond with what police described as life-threatening injuries.
The passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police have identified two victims as Richmond residents. They are 62-year-old Joan V. Middleton and 73-year-old Shirley M. Smothers.
The state police accident reconstruction team is at the scene.
