ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A Fairfax County dentist has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for illegally distributing prescription medications to patients and employees.
Prosecutors said Friday that 51-year-old Hamada Makarita of Oakton also used the identity of another dentist to fraudulently bill an insurance company for more than $160,000 in claims.
Makarita was convicted in November on numerous charges, including health care fraud, aggravated identity theft, and of dispensing controlled substances.
Prosecutors say gave Fentanyl, Vicodin, and Valium to patients and employees without a legitimate dental purpose. Authorities say he also provided $160,000 in services to relatives and billed them in the name of another dentist.
