LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Liberty University has pledged a $500,000 matching gift to pay for restoring a historic theater in Lynchburg.

The Academy of Music Theatre is conducting a campaign to raise $16.6 million for the project.

Theater executive director David Jenkins says in a news release that the matching gift sends a message to community leaders that the restoration is important to Lynchburg and the region.

The theater opened in 1905 but a fire destroyed it in 1911. The theater was rebuilt in 1912.
