Juvenile center school named for state senator

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia's three juvenile correctional center high schools are being consolidated and named in honor of the late state Sen. Yvonne Miller.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the changes Friday. He said the consolidation will streamline record-keeping and strengthen the sense of unity among residents housed at the juvenile correctional centers.

The Yvonne B. Miller High School will have three campuses -- two in the Richmond area and one in Culpeper.

McDonnell said naming the school in honor of the longtime Norfolk lawmaker will serve as a lasting reminder of her commitment to educating all youth, regardless of their circumstances. The school is the first in Virginia to be named for Miller, a lifelong educator and the first black woman elected to the state's legislature. Miller died in July at age 77.
