Custom Fairfax tags meet with cool reception

Sunday - 3/31/2013, 5:33pm  ET

FAIRFAX, Va. - Fairfax County officials are asking the state to create a special county license plate. But residents of Virginia's most populous county don't seem too interested.

The plates are intended to allow residents to show civic pride and generate some revenue for the county. Before it starts printing the plates, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles requires that at least 350 people pre-order them to show they'll be profitable.

But The Washington Examiner (http://tinyurl.com/bpfue2m ) reports that so far, just 92 people have signed up to order the plates. Even some of the county's supervisors haven't applied for them yet.

If the plates are printed, $15 from each sale and annual renewal would go to the county. Officials say they hope to meet the threshold of 350 pre-orders in the coming months.
