PETERSBURG, Va. - Fort Lee's shuttle service is being curbed to make way for taxis.
The Army base in Petersburg says the switch to the taxi service in April is intended to save money on fuel and leasing costs and spare civilian and military travelers on the base time. The shuttle buses operate on routes that can take up to 40 minutes to complete.
Fort Lee's transportation officer, Bob White, said the taxi service will operate like any other, providing door-to-door pickup and delivery. The new service will use three or four 12-passenger vans as well as other vehicles.
White said the switch is expected to save the base $163,000 annually.
