Asparagus arriving later in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- An early spring favorite, asparagus, is running late this season in Virginia.

Growers say the extended winter weather is slowing the start of fruit and vegetable season, including asparagus. Emmett Snead grows 100 acres in Caroline County and he says while many may hunger for asparagus for Easter Sunday, the stalky vegetable typically is harvested in late April through early June.

Still, he says, his asparagus came in a month early last year, a first in his 50-plus years of growing.

When they arrive, they grow at a prodigious rate -- 6 to 12 inches a day.
