NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Former Virginia Health Commissioner Karen Remley is taking a position at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

The Norfolk school says Remley will become the founding director of the M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health.

Remley resigned from the commissioner's job last October over Virginia's strict new abortion clinic regulations.

Officials say Remley will lead the institute's effort to leverage the school's "clinical, research and educational programs to positively affect specific health priorities in Hampton Roads."

The foundation has been endowed with $3 million from the Brock family. The family made its fortune through ownership of the Dollar Tree stores, among other investments.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/XDSGKp ) that Remley also will hold a faculty appointment as associate professor of pediatrics and health professions.
