RICHMOND, Va. - Should Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling run for governor as an independent?

That's exactly what Bolling is asking a broad range of supporters, business leaders, Republican activists and others in a blast e-mail survey that doubles as a pitch for his qualifications.

Bolling faces his own March 14 deadline for either entering the race against the presumptive major party nominees, Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

In the e-mail, he says business and community leaders across Virginia have urged him to "re-enter the race for governor as an Independent Republican." He says he feels the GOP is headed in the wrong direction, and speaks prospectively of where he will focus as governor.

Bolling abandoned his GOP gubernatorial bid in November, conceding he couldn't defeat Cuccinelli in a Republican convention.
