DANVILLE, Va. - A Danville woman faces up to 10 years in prison for embezzling Social Security benefits.
Joie Scott Whitt also faces a fine of up to $250,000.
The 33-year-old Whitt pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District in Danville to theft of government monies.
Prosecutors say Whitt embezzled more than $34,000 in Social Security benefits from Alternative Community Experience's operating account. She was the organization's bookkeeper.
The benefits were intended for disabled people served by the organization. It provides residential and day support services for people with mental illnesses, mental retardation and substance abuse problems.
