RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Heavy snow has downed trees, disabled vehicles and caused numerous crashes in southwestern Virginia, forcing authorities to partially close Interstate 77.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said traffic was moving slowly Thursday night and officials were working to reopen all lanes.

The storm also caused tens of thousands of customers in Virginia to lose power.

Appalachian Power said heavy, wet snow knocked out power to 71,000 customers in southwestern Virginia, while Dominion Virginia Power said at least 2,500 customers were without power.

The National Weather Service said more than a foot of snow was possible in the highest elevations of southwestern Virginia, with 5 to 10 inches in the Blue Ridge Mountains, up to 6 inches from Martinsville north to Charlottesville, and 3 to 5 inches in Richmond.
