Virginia to hold last hearing on I-95 toll plan

There is a public hearing Monday night in Fredericksburg on Virginia’s plan to put tolls on I-95.

It’s the third and final public hearing on the issue this month, and the first in Northern Virginia. The other two hearings have drawn many opponents of the plan to add tolls on 95 in Sussex County, near the North Carolina line.

There would be one main toll plaza, plus tolls on the ramps at four exits. The proposed toll rates for cars are $4 in the toll plaza, and $2 on the ramps. Truck tolls, based on the number of axles, would be as high as $15 at the toll plaza for 6-axle vehicles.

There are discounts proposed for people who live near the tolls and have an EZPass, meant to ease the burden on commuters.

VDOT says the millions in revenue generated by the tolls could help with needed improvements for 95.

The plan is part of a federal pilot project, so it still must be approved again by the Federal Highway Administration.

VDOT’s tentative schedule for the project has construction on the tolling facilities beginning in 2014, with tolls beginning sometime in 2015.

Monday night’s meeting in Fredericksburg is from 6 – 8 p.m. at VDOT’s Fredericksburg District at 86 Deacon Road.

I-95 carries 40 percent of interstate traffic in Virginia.
