RICHMOND, Va. - Former Fox News contributor and northern Virginia businessman Pete Snyder is joining a crowded Republican field for next year's lieutenant governor race.

Snyder announced his candidacy on Monday. He stepped down from Fox News on Friday.

Snyder coordinated the unsuccessful Virginia Republican campaign to unseat President Barack Obama and defeat U.S. Sen.-elect Tim Kaine. Snyder founded social media marketing agency New Media Strategies and now runs capital investment company Disruptor Capital.

He joins several Republican candidates who already have announced their intentions to run, including Prince William County Del. Scott Lingamfelter, Chesterfield County Sen. Steve Martin, Prince William Supervisor Corey Stewart and former state Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis.

Republicans will choose their nominee in a state party convention in May.
