Democrat Hester wins Va House special election

Wednesday - 12/19/2012, 11:04am  ET

NORFOLK, VA. - Former Norfolk City Councilwoman Daun Hester has won a special election to fill an open House of Delegates seat.

The Democrat received 94 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election. She defeated independent candidate James St. John.

The seat was left open when former Del. Kenny Alexander was elected in September to finish the term of the late state Sen. Yvonne Miller.

Hester will be sworn in to represent the 89th District when the General Assembly convenes Jan. 9. The district covers most of central and southern Norfolk.

The 57-year-old school principal and education consultant served 14 years on the city council, including four as vice mayor.
