Shots fired, officer punched Mary Baldwin mixer

Monday - 11/5/2012, 12:37pm  ET

STAUNTON, Va. - Police are investigating an outbreak of violence during a campus mixer at Mary Baldwin College.

Authorities say someone fired shots after Staunton police and campus security officers tried to break up an incident and disperse the crowd early Saturday. A Staunton officer was punched in the face.

Mary Baldwin spokeswoman Crista Cabe tells The News Virginian ( http://bit.ly/TsXGui) that school officials believe male guests of students were involved in firing the shots.

No one was injured by the gunfire.

Cabe says she issued an alert to all students to stay in their dorms. An all-clear alert was issued about an hour later.

The mixer was being held at the college's student activities center.
