VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach is stepping up enforcement of rules regarding animals on beaches.

The City Council recently amended an ordinance to allow Animal Control officers to issue summonses to violators. Police already have that authority.

Animals are banned on the beach, the Boardwalk and the grass west of the Boardwalk from Rudee Inlet to 42nd Street from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Dogs and cats are allowed on other public beaches between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. the following day. But they must be under the control of a responsible person.

Police Lt. David Squires tells The Virginian-Pilot ( http://bit.ly/LUJdnR) that failure to clean up dog waste is the worst offense. Violators face up to 12 months in jail and a maximum $2,500 fine.
