CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A Nelson County man has pleaded guilty to selling illegally poached bear organs and fighting gamecocks.
U.S. Attorney Timothy Heaphy says 71-year-old David Tracy Davis also pleaded guilty Monday to possession of protected migratory birds and distribution of marijuana. The four offenses are punishable by a total of 11 1/2 years in prison.
According to prosecutors, Davis admitted selling black bear gallbladders to undercover agents. Black bear gallbladders and bile are used in traditional Eastern medicine. Davis also offered to help an undercover agent train a rooster for cockfighting and admitted possessing the talons of a Red Tailed Hawk and giving agents marijuana seeds.
Davis is serving a three-month sentence after pleading guilty in Nelson County Circuit Court to animal cruelty and possessing a gun while making or selling illegal alcohol.
