RICHMOND, Va. - Three Virginians are among the 30 finalists for the White House Fellows Class 2012-13.

They are taking part in selection weekend this weekend in Washington. A commission will recommend between 11 and 19 people to President Barack Obama for a one-year appointment as fellows.

Officials say the finalists for the 48th class come from varied professions including medicine, law, business, journalism, local government, and the armed services.

Among the finalists are: Paris Butler, a University of Virginia surgical resident from Charlottesville; Bethany Henderson, of Arlington, founder and executive director of City Hall Fellows; and Fairfax native Adam Thiel, fire chief for the city of Alexandria.

The White House Fellows program was started by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. It's a way to give leaders firsthand experience in the federal government.
