RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia Department of Transportation wants to know how the public feels about a proposed $1 monthly fee for E-ZPass users.
The department is accepting public comments on the proposal through June 12.
Several new toll roads are scheduled to open over the next few years, and VDOT says the monthly fee is needed to keep up with the costs of operating the E-ZPass program.
The agency plans to use the money to buy nearly 500,000 E-ZPass transponders, upgrade technology and other services, and to begin selling them in stores in northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and at DMV locations.
Residents can go to http://www.virginiadot.org/e-zpass for information on the proposed fee and to comment online. Comments also may be submitted by mail and email.
A final decision is expected in June.
