CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The newest member of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is formally joining the court after a swearing-in ceremony in West Virginia.
Stephanie Dawn Thacker of Hamlin, W.Va., has already heard cases after being confirmed by the Senate back in April. She formally joined the Richmond, Va.-based appeals court when she took the oath of office Tuesday afternoon at the federal courthouse in Charleston.
Thacker takes the seat left vacant by the March death of Judge Blane Michael. She most recently was a partner in the Charleston law firm of Guthrie & Thomas. Before that, she served in the U.S. Justice Department, the U.S. attorney's office and the state attorney general's office.
The 15-member appeals court covers North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
